I really enjoyed my stay here. That being said, there is a reason this place is such a good deal: it's an unfinished basement that still feels very much a work in progress. I liked it though. The apartment is quiet and cozy, and I especially appreciated that I had so much privacy. Below are my pros and cons.
Pros: Kymi is very responsive. Clean towels and a clean bath mat are provided. The bathroom had soap. There is a small heater in case you get cold. The apartment is very private and pretty quiet. There is a mini-refrigerator and a coffeemaker. And the best part: the location. You're in a lovely neighborhood full of beautiful bungalow houses. If you walk out of the house and turn right, in about 10 minutes you'll hit all the shops and restaurants on College Ave., and the Rockridge Bart is right there. If you go left, you'll hit Temescal in about 7 minutes. You can be in downtown SF in about 30 minutes, door to door (including the amount of time it takes to walk to the Rockridge Bart station).
Cons: The apartment is in a garage, and it's unfinished with some exposed hoses that connect to the house's furnace. In any place but the Bay Area, this apartment would be full of spiders and other creepy crawlers, but I didn't see any while I was there (I used to live in Oakland and also remember being shocked that there were so few bugs anywhere). There is a curtain next to the bed, but on the other side of the curtain is just some clothes and shoes that are being stored in the garage. The bathroom has a tub, but where the faucet should be there is a hose connected to a handshower. This makes showering kinda difficult, and there is no shower curtain so you have to be careful not to spray the entire bathroom. There is no door on the bathroom, just a thin curtain. If you're sharing this space with someone, know that you'll have almost no privacy in the bathroom. The bed is tiny--I think it's a child's bed from Ikea. In the event you are sharing this space with your significant other, it will be very tight and probably quite uncomfortable for two average-sized adults.
All that being said, if you're a single person looking for a decent, cheap place to rest your head at night, you can't beat this place. The location is great, you're close to Bart, and you have a ton of privacy. I'd stay here again.
