Food scene

The Kolbe store and Cafe, directly next to our house, has as wide of an assortment of stuff as you can imagine. The cafe just opened last year, and they have a typical selection of baked goods, respectable bagels for non-NYers, good coffee, and a good selection of desserts including shakes and root beer floats for an afternoon treat. We highly recommend the home-made pies! The store itself is kind of fun to meander and get lost inside. The building used to be a historic hotel. There’s an old player piano, that still works for 25 cents. Rich is the owner, while Dewey and Lilly are our very nice visiting dog neighbors.

Sightseeing

Go for a walk/run/bike on the towpath, which is part of the 60-mile long Delaware Canal State Park, across the canal from the house. To get there: Go over the green bridge. Immediately after crossing, go into abandoned lot on right and then turn back toward canal. Once you get to the towpath, go south along canal to walk over aqueduct (pictured on the web site for the park) and see an old lock with its accompanying lock house. If you go north along canal, you’ll walk along a tree nursery, which is nice, and where we often see bluebirds. But you can walk/run/ride for miles in either direction.

There’s a fantastic hiking trail that goes along the Tohickon Creek in the middle of town. To get there, you turn right at the end of our driveway, walk down to the stop sign, cross over the bridge with the large sculptures on the right, turn right on the other side of the bridge to cross on a mini-bridge, and then turn right into a little parking area for the area next to the creek. The path picks up from the parking lot and you can have a scavenger hunt looking for all of the turtles some local sculptor placed along the beginning of the path. It’s a really nice hike and we probably have only gone 30-45 mins in before stopping to play along the creek with picnic and then turning around. Swim in Tohickon Creek - Walk down steepish path through woods. Swim in creek and sit on big boulders as water rushes around you. Free. Requires some adventurousness and sturdy shoes. Closer than the Tohickon Pool, but on the same route (as you go uphill on Cafferty Road a bit, you can park on left side of road (little area allows 2-3 cars) across from graveyard.

Tohickon Valley Pool - Just a short drive up the hill on Cafferty Rd. It’s a public pool surrounded by woods and a playground. $12 for non-residents on the weekend. Open 12-6:30; Memorial Day to Labor Day. (To get there go right out of driveway, right at stop sign, take next left that forks on to Cafferty Rd just before the church, go uphill a bit, past a cemetery, the road flattens out and then the park entrance will be on your left.)
