We love the Scottish Seabird Centre for it's open deck and webcams to watch the birds on the nearby islands. It also has delicious home-made food in it's cafe, a wonderful gift shop and discovery centre. It has won over 25 awards for sustainability, quality, innovation and customer service. It is a conservation and education charity dedicated to inspiring people to care for wildlife and the natural environment. The Harbour, North Berwick, EH39 4SS www.seabird.org 01620 890202

The National Museum of Flight is about a 15 minute drive at East Fortune. Good for rainy day but take your umbrella because there is walking between the exhibits outside. You can see inside different aeroplanes including Concorde. Reputed to be the UK's best-preserved Second World War airfield.

The village of Dirleton is so pretty and this castle and its gardens situated right in the village is a lovely visit. There's lots of nooks and crannies to explore in the castle ruins and we love wandering round imagining it in its heyday.

Walk the 187 metres to the top of this 300 million year old volcanic lava plug with a whale bone on the top. With rest stops on the way it is worth it for the 360 views across eastern half of the Lothians and Edinburgh, Fife to the north, and the northern edge of the Southern Uplands to the south.
