Nearby

Here's a few places that are very close.
Coffee, beer and wine, and free board games. And it's only about three blocks away. Lots of UH students in the evenings. They're friendly–if you're alone you can probably find a game to join.

Small family owned Mexican restaurant; great for an inexpensive relaxed breakfast. I suggest huevos a la Mexicana with corn tortillas.

I work here, but I always like visiting universities. UH has a large campus with a bit of interesting art deco architecture, a variety of art and sculpture, and a couple nice fountains. It's a great place to go for a walk, and you can even grab lunch at one of the food courts.

Special

This is a list of some of my favorite spots in Houston. They're mainly a bit peculiar in one way or another.
Among the best liquor stores in the nation. Huge selection with a genuinely helpful staff and good prices. They also have food; breads, cheeses and deli items and an impressive aisle of chocolate. If you're into food and beverages, it's worth a visit. During the holidays the place is packed, and there's plenty of free samples.

Not everyone will appreciate its charms. This is basically a vacant lot with picnic benches and a cook shack. It's specialty is hotdogs made from unusual meats like buffalo and rabbit. Sometimes it's nearly empty, but in the evenings on a weekend, you may be lucky to find a seat. And don't go in a hurry because they're slow, except with the beer.

OK, I haven't been here, but it's pretty new, and I keep intending to go. It's a drive-in theatre with the Houston skyline in the background. They show first run movies Thurs-Sunday, and it's pretty nearby.

Mark Rothko's creation is one of the greatest achievements of abstract expressionism. It can strike the visitor as the pinnacle of pretentiousness or a sublime encounter with the unknowable. I think it's worth a visit.

This is a new addition to Houston. In fact, until a few years ago it was a golf course. But it's a large impressive space any gardener will appreciate.

Dark, luxurious dive/make-out bar. I suppose just about everyone in Houston knows this 50 year old institution, but it feels special because there's NO signage. The blue door is under a staircase on the backside of a strip of shops. Just open the blue door and walk in. It's named for the original owners; Martha, Fred and Leslie.

Houston backwards. An art dive. Charming and dysfunctional, slightly intimidating. You can read about it here: https://www.texasmonthly.com/arts-entertainment/notsuoh-oral-history-houston/

This is just one stop on the bayou that weaves along the North edge of downtown. It's a wonderfully complex space with wide paved walkways meandering between the buildings and under the freeways. It's a fantastic destination for bicycling.
