One of the few dog friendly cafes in town, right next to the beautiful botanic gardens. A bit hipster, so the servings aren't that generous for the cost. Delicious frappes! Keep your eye out for the orange footed scrub fowl which often wander across the deck.

A very interactive restaurant where you are encouraged to catch your food after it's cooked in front of you. Can be expensive - about $150 for dinner for two with drinks.

A little on the hipster side, this cafe/almost restaurant on the beach does themed menus every Friday night, with different cuisines from around the world. There's always plenty of vegetarian options but the servings aren't that generous. The cafe is dog friendly so expect to see dogs hanging around. Look them up on Facebook to see what this week's cuisine is.

Laneway creates the Melbourne hipster experience right here in Darwin. Delicious food and coffee and a rustic sort of feel to the place. Weekend lunch is usually busy, resulting in about a 20 minute wait.

Recently renovated with a few bars, wide variety of restaurants and meals and free shuttle bus service from the waterfront to combat parking congestion. Views are not as impressive as the nearby Waterfront precinct but the food is better value. This wharf survived the bombing of Darwin and cyclone Tracy so has historical significance.

A bit on the pricey side, but this is definitely the best quality Greek food in Darwin. Meals are share plate style servings. Generally a busy, cosy restaurant so it can get a bit loud. Sometimes has live music.

Best value animal park in Darwin. Huge variety of animals and the cheapest entry fee of all three parks. Perfect destination if you have a car; there is no public transport to the park. Pretty much all the animals are native, with a huge walk-in aviary and a train to take you between exhibits. Check their website for the birds of prey show times. You could easily spend an entire day here and still not see it all. There's also a cafe on site if you get hungry. Entry is $32pp

It's a little known fact that this library is open to the public, not just university students. If you have an eduroam account (most Australian universities and some overseas universities offer it) you can use their WiFi for free. Otherwise, you need to BYO. This library has excellent opening hours, especially during exam or end of semester periods. Much quieter than public libraries. Plenty of quiet study areas and the facilities, e.g. Toilets and water fountains, power points, are plentiful and well kept. There's vending machines downstairs and a cafe on site that is open during the day on weekdays.

Best value op shop (thrift store / second hand store) in Darwin. A short 10 minute walk from my Airbnb listing. Most items are $1-2, and it's run by volunteers. The clothes are sorted quite well - into long sleeves, jeans, skirts, women's, men's etc. There is also a volunteer-run cafe on Saturday mornings, which invites you to pay via donation. If you have a green thumb you can contribute to their community garden too.
