The best Turkish food we've had outside Turkey (and we've been to a lot of Turkish restaurants)! In the site of an old hair salon (and they've not done much to the exterior) the mezze plates are amazing, as are the borek, haloumi and patlejan. They also have a pretty decent wine cellar - including Turkish wines. A 10 minute walk down King Street.

One of our favourite places for an early dinner. Upstairs off Church Street. The name means "new town" in Japanese. Great and inexpensive Japanese (including very authentic okonomiyaki) and Japanese beers. If you book or get there early you'll get a booth by a window overlooking the bustle of King Street.

Our favourite café in Camperdown. You order inside the cafe but if you take a picnic rug and a number you can sit on the grass in the park over the road and the waiters will bring your food over to you. About 15 minutes walk away.

Emily's favourite local bakery cafe. Great pastries and chocolate croissants and their coffee is not bad either. I love their Ginger Ninjas. Funnily enough, it seems to have become a stop on Chinese and Japanese tour circuits. Great for takeaway breakfast to take over the road to Camperdown Memorial Rest Park.

The cemetery at St Stephen's is one of the quietest and most peaceful spots in Newtown and Camperdown. Hardly anyone goes in and it is a lovely place to sit and contemplate under the trees. The graves are of people like Sir Thomas Mitchell and 19th century mariners.

Back street Newtown pub. A great place to repair to for beers and boutique pub food after an afternoon spent at the Newtown Festival or lounging in the Camperdown Memorial Rest Park. Atmospherically dilapidated front bar and two beer gardens. A favourite of Sydney University students, including us back in the day.
