This stunning, sand and rock, beach, backed by grassy dunes, lies on the North Sea coast, between Berwick and the Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve. Bottlenose dolphins have been spotting regularly from the beach. The rural beach is within the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, an area popular with walkers. Both the Northumberland Coast Path and the National Cycle Route pass nearby. In early summer, beautiful wild flowers can be seen along the paths behind the dunes. This beach is a great spot to come for long, windswept walks, to admire the big, open sky and beautiful seascapes. On clear days it is often possible to see Holy Island and Bamburgh Castle to the south of the beach. As well as walkers, and families who come to enjoy the sand and rockpools exposed at low tide, this beach is also used by birdwatchers, surfers and body boarders.

Castles

In the centre of the beautiful Etal village, Etal Castle was built in the mid 14th century by Robert Manners as a defence against Scots raiders. The fortified tower house stands in a strategic position by a ford over the River Till, fell to James IV's invading Scots army in 1513, immediately before their catastrophic defeat at nearby Flodden. The 19th-century chapel displays an award-winning exhibition telling the dramatic story of Flodden, and the Anglo-Scottish border warfare that ended with the accession of James I in 1603.

This remarkable and very private castle has been continuously owned by just one family line since the 1200's. A visit from Edward I in 1298 was followed by many other Royal visits right down through the centuries. See Chillingham's alarming dungeons as well as active restoration in the Great Halls and State Rooms which are gradually brought back to life with tapestries, arms and armour. Chillingham even has a very real torture chamber. Named Britain’s most haunted historic castle, you can booked ghost tours. Chillingham also has the worlds only herd of wild cattle – separate tickets can be purchased to view them with a guide

Berwick-upon-Tweed is a town of contrasts, where a history of conflict has given way to an ethos of collaboration. A big part of what makes Berwick-upon-Tweed unique is that it can’t be pinned down to having any one identity, any single main feature or even just one way of saying things. Berwick-upon-Tweed is a beautiful and exciting border-land melting pot and that’s what gives it such impressive depth of character. Follow the famous Lowry Trial around the Town and Elizabethan walls.

Chillingham offers an outstanding day out in one of the most beautiful parts of Northumberland. You will never forget your visit to the wild white cattle. These cattle are more rare than the Panda and this is the world only wild herd. These unique beasts fight for the chance to mate. Bulls can – and do – kill each other. The guided tours take you close, but not too close, to these extraordinary animals. Please note this is a walking tour. The ground can be uneven and muddy in parts. We recommend suitable footwear. Flip-flops and sandals are not advisable.
