This is our favorite restaurant in New Orleans! Besides being delicious, beautiful and friendly, we love it because the menu changes so often. New American with a strong Louisiana influence and locally sourced ingredients. They have an awesome sommelier with a very interesting wine list. Look for no-menu Tuesdays in the summer (really, they don't tell you what you will be eating) usually around $40 for 5 courses + optional $35-ish wine pairing, not cheap but a bargain for this quality. Fried chicken and champagne is a treat when they have it!

Known for arguably the best donuts in town, their coffee is also excellent. Not a sweet tooth? Don't miss their sliders & fries - cheeseburgers, fried chicken(!) pork belly and specials. Either way, this is gourmet comfort food, perfect if you've just arrived and need some nourishment - or next morning for an indulgence. 7a-9p daily Long line and you only need coffee? check out the popup in Stein's next door

Not only the only Jewish Italian deli in town but one of the best you'll find anywhere. Started with a focus on gourmet meats, cheeses and pantry specialties, their sandwiches are the bomb and became an instant hit. Daily specials + standbys like pastrami & corned beef. Don't miss the Rachel. Breakfast includes egg sandwiches, bagels and smoked fish. Best selection of rare craft beer in town + wine and gourmet sodas. Plus a pop-up coffee shop in the corner! Don't let Dan's attitude and reputation put you off ("Tourists please make way for our good customers"), he has a heart of gold! Grab some snacks and beer or wine for the front porch. To avoid the line on weekends, call in your order.

Local chain with something for everyone at breakfast or lunch. Sit outside under the live oak tree when the weather is nice. Omelets, biscuits and gravy and a full bar. Local chain that has expanded along the Gulf Coast. Don't be tempted to stop at the slippery place across the street, keep walking one more block to Another Broken Egg instead.

Creole classic high-end restaurant in the heart of the Garden District. The Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers of New Orleans fine dining, many chefs & servers have learned their chops here including Emeril Lagasse and Paul Prudhomme. Arrive a few minutes early and have a drink at the bar, accessed by walking through the massive kitchen. Despite the huge number of patrons served, they manage to keep the quality & service high. Ask for a table in the tree-top viewed Garden Room.

Very creative casual fare that we especially loved for weeknight carry-out, order and pick up while walking Jack the dog. Then Bon Appetite named it the best new restaurant in America 2007ish and lines went out the door, they close now at 3pm. Still worth it. Their sister breakfast place Mollys is a bit closer and usually easier to get in to, especially early.

Iconic Irish Channel watering hole, been there for decades. Friendly staff and clientele, dive bar atmosphere, popular with an inky motor scooter crowd. Good beer and Irish Whiskey, great place to watch Saints games with the locals. Recently renovated with high ceilings restored, kitchen re-opening fall 2019. Sightseeing

The whole area is beautiful, and the Garden District 'proper' has massive, well maintained ante- and postbellum mansions that you usually only see in movies or guidebooks. Book a tour or just stop by Commanders Palace and ask the host for a walking tour pamphlet. Enjoy the architecture and history or do the tourist thing and visit celebrity houses, it's all beautiful!

The streetcar is an historic landmark in and of itself, not to mention the mansions and live oak trees. You can ride from the Quarter to Carrollton, get off and sight see or grab a bite or beverage along the way. Tip - nighttime is magical, but they leave the lights on inside so bright that it is hard to see outside unless you are right at the window. Get out and walk or take an uber or taxi at night.

Jack's place used to be in the beer triangle (NOLA Brewing, Courtyard Brewing and Avenue Pub), we are now losing count of great beer outlets. Here's a few
First micro brewery & tap room in New Orleans, not-so-micro anymore. The expanded tap room is a great place to sample their standard as well as seasonal and experimental brews. The new music room in the back features great tunes including a semi-regular Thursday night series. They host numerous parties and special events, especially for good-cause fund-raising. Good vibe & culture, their lobbying to allow tap rooms in Louisiana breweries opened the door for much of their competition. That good will has come back to them and they continue to grow and prosper. Before that they could only serve free samples during tours, a tradition that thankfully continues early Friday afternoons.
