My favourite restaurants in the area

Local places within walking distance that are favourites among Cambodian and expat locals, with a mix of prices for any budget and all places that I have been frequenting for the past few years and highly recommend!
Lot 369 is right downstairs, and is an expat and local favourite coffee / café spot! The café is a socially and environmentally responsible business, and has an Australian brunch-style menu. Vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, meat, healthy and naughty options are on the menu, including a range of different coffees, smoothies, juices, probiotic drinks, and desserts. The 2nd Lot 369 Café location is located on street 282 in BKK 1, right near the Independence Monument in the center of town.

Delicious menu that is a fusion of Japanese-inspired Asian noodles, dumplings and more, with cheap prices and also a cute little spot to hang out. This place is an expat favourite and has been for years, its one of the oldest running places in the Russian Markets area!

My favourite bars in the area

Local haunts that are favourites of both Khmer locals, expats and tourists (though they're a little harder to find, and so more of a favourite of expats than short visitors). Excellent cocktails and atmosphere, these places are famous in the Russian Markets area. And if all else fails, just wander down street 450 on your way to the Russian Markets and you'll pass a few local favourites, like TINI and others.
Best view of the sunset over the Russian Markets, with a chilled open-air rooftop space, excellent cocktails, and a great menu. An excellent place to have a drink whilst watching the busy food markets below. A little hard to find, but when at the markets on the street just look up to find the sign!

I love this place because as soon as I walk inside I feel like I'm back in Melbourne! I love the atmosphere, the drinks, the music, and general ambience. The staff here are also really lovely and there's always great tunes playing, people DJing, and different specials and events happening frequently.

Yoga Places

A couple of nearby places with regular yoga classes
A wonderful spot if you want to do some yoga while you are in town and it is only about 10 - 15 minutes in a tuk from the apartment. They do a range of different yoga’s – from Ashtanga, Iyegnar to Yin. This is also an NGO, so your money for each class goes towards training up Cambodians to teach yoga. The drop in class fee is around $9.

Every Monday & Thursday from 6-7pm they open up the temple to allow people to join a Vipasanna meditation. It is really very magical to meditate in this space and it is completely free.

Best sites / shopping nearby (that aren't in your guide book)

My favourite places to buy gifts for others or treats for myself, within walking distance of the apartment. The obvious shopping place nearby is the Russian Markets; these other places are little local favourites that are quirky and different, but also ethical and sustainable shopping / experiences :)
This ethical and sustainable jewellery + clothing boutique is staffed by women who have come from the trafficking industry. It is a social enterprise that makes truly beautiful, excellent quality, sustainable and feminist products. My favourite jewellery and place to shop for gifts :)

If you like gin, then make sure you check out this new little distillery. You can walk in and buy a bottle to try or take home, and they occasionally have small public events there too. The place is owned by a European couple, and all the gin is made here in Phnom Penh, with a "Mekong Twist" using local ingredients and fusions. Honestly the best gin you will find in Cambodia, and you can also buy little bottles that make excellent gifts!
