Donner lake is a great place to do all sorts of outdoor activities. Many mobility events use Donner Pass Rd. such as biking, running, and motorbiking events. Donner also has famous rock-climbing and ice climbing cliffs and great clear water boating that rivals, Lake Tahoe. Back country skiing and ski resorts are only minutes away from Donner. Donner and Truckee have expensive places to stay, but Reno/Sparks are much cheaper and only about 45 minutes' drive to Donner.
