Located behind an unassuming little house in ix-Xaghra, on the island of Gozo, you’ll find one of the most unusual caves in Malta, Ninu’s Cave. Discovered by local resident Joseph Rapa, the cave is accessed via a steep set of stairs inside a private family home. Guided tours are usually taken by a member of the family, who, for a small fee, will point out all the interesting geological features of the cave, such as some impressive stalactites and stalagmites.

A little way down the road from Ninu’s Cave, you’ll find Xerri’s Grotto. A large subterranean burial chamber dug out of the rock and spread across three separate levels, the Hypogeum is undoubtedly one of the most impressive caves in Malta. First discovered in 1902, excavations continued up until 1911, with the many interconnected chambers and passageways finally opening to an intrigued public in 1908. Unfortunately, all this interest resulted in some damage to the Hypogeum’s delicate prehistoric wall paintings, meaning only ten people are now allowed in per day. Best get in there quick, then!

one of the major fortifications in the capital city of Valletta. The site has been a strategic military asset since around 1417, when a watchtower was first reported. It’s been attacked, destroyed, and rebuilt numerous times over the centuries that followed, but since its recent renovation, it’s looking better than ever. Today, you can visit the fort to walk in the footsteps of history and see the National War Museum, also on the site; its collection of historic artefacts is comprehensive with items dating back to the Bronze Age. pick up a ticket to the In Guardia Parade: taking place every Sunday, enthusiastic re-enactors don full costume for the weekly performance.

You can admire Gozo’s fortified Citadel from outside its walls (and you should), but don’t miss the chance to venture inside its formidable walls. Like Fort St. Elmo, the Citadel’s a survivor of the Great Siege of 1565, but the hill on which it’s perched has been settled since at least Neolithic times; commanding 360° views of the surrounding countryside, it would have been an enviable military stronghold. Today, you can enjoy the views, explore the wonderfully preserved architecture, and visit numerous top-notch museums and cultural spots, like the Baroque Gozo Cathedral

Fancy seeing what 19th century British engineers built to protect Malta from the Italians? Fort Rinella itself is impressive, but what set it apart from some of the other forts in Malta was its massive 100-ton gun positioned on the coastal battery – definitely enough to keep the Italian navy at bay. For a touch of historical flair, plan your visit to coincide with the regular volunteer tours where guides dress up like Victorian soldiers to show you round. Audience participation is not, thankfully, required.

think the €20 basic membership is not great value to be honest. The view is nice and the pool is nice and clean, but it’s small and on weekends especially it gets quite busy. However the €30 with food is much better value , for that rate. €15 goes towards entrance and €15 towards food. Taking everything into account, that’s the best value for a lido in St Julians.

Che Cafe & essential - little known pool and cafe , book in advance +356 2135 4838 The pool itself at Che Cafe is small but lovely. Incredibly clean, a shallow and a deep end, steps to get in and out with sun-beds all around. The water is cool and refreshing but not as freezing as some pools. It is only small so with 10 people it’d feel a little crowded but because it’s so small it’s not really one for swimming up and down- you’ll all just pop in and float around to cool down and there is plenty of room for that! The staff are really friendly,

With steep cliffs, slabs and crevasses we take you to the most spectacular places to abseil in Malta. Standing securely on the edge of a steep incline, with the rope disappearing off the edge to the bottom somewhere beneath you, your nerves are on full alert. As you lean back and commence your descent adrenaline is pumping furiously around your body and the feeling is intense! As you continue your descent the excited feelings turn into relief and happiness at overcoming your initial fears and being in control while descending in such a stunning atmosphere. Our longest abseil is over 75m all the way to a small beach below...amazing...but of course we start you off on shorter routes .

Renting the boat was very easy and straight forward. No license required. The boats are in good condition. We cruised around the harbour. We also went out into the sea. It was quite wavy but the boat is stable enough to drive through a little rougher waters as well. This was definitely the best fun activity we did during out stay on Malta."

Review Amazing experience! Definitely recommend Bluewaves Watersports. There are plenty of other options that take you around the island and to the Blue Lagoon, but these guys are awesome and their smaller speedboats allow you to experience an adrenaline ride as well as be able to take the boat into the caves where the bigger boats cannot. We booked a boat tour ahead of time and it was amazing. The entire crew was friendly and had a great attitude. When we booked, it was recommended that we arrive an hour early to make sure we didn't miss our time slot. I was worried we would wait around, but when we arrived (early), the team offered us a paddle-boat with a slide to pass the time.

The Inquisitor’s Palace, situated in the heart of Vittoriosa, is one of the very few surviving palaces of its kind which, in the early modern period could be found all over Europe and South America. Many of these palaces simply succumbed to the ravages of time or were victims of the anti-reactionary power unleashed by the French Revolution. Fortunately, the Maltese Inquisitor’s Palace, throughout its five centuries of history, always hosted high-ranking officials representing the main powers on the island, who therefore ensured its survival

One of the world’s largest collections of arms and armour that is still housed in its original building. The Knights of St John were a unique brotherhood of resolute warrior monks. From Malta, their island stronghold, these combatant aristocrats from the noblest houses of Europe, carried out their relentless crusade against the Ottoman Turks in defence of the Catholic faith. The Palace Armoury is certainly one of the most visible and tangible symbols of the past glories of the Sovereign Hospitaller Military Order of Malta

The Mdina Dungeons are located beneath the Magisterial Vilhena Palace just inside the main entrance gate to Mdina, at the first turning on the right. Here in these series of secret underground passageways, chambers and cells a number of events, and the often mysterious circumstances surrounding them, have been recreated to portray events from the dark side of Maltese history. From Roman times to the Arabs, the Knights and even Napoleon, you will find episodes and characters from the ancient past portrayed in startling realism, revealing stories sometimes too dramatic to be believed.
