City/town information

Algarve is not only beaches and golf. Silves preserves traces of its Arab past and Lagos from the time of the Discoveries. More cosmopolitan Portimao and Albufeira are bustling towns by night and day. Faro, the gateway to the region, deserves a long stop to discover its beautiful historic center and Tavira is a showcase for traditional architecture.

Monchique’s central square has a small paved area with benches, trees, statues and tiles, a few cafés and shops, and a pretty water feature with a Moorish-style water wheel. One of the charming things to see in Monchique are the many statues and sculptures dotted around the main square, then head up to view the impressive Manueline doorway of the parish church. There are lots of craft shops to explore then carry on up to Fóia and enjoy the views from the highest point in the Algarve.

Sagres is the most southwestern point of continental Europe. It's magnificent cliffs make it a nice place to visit. It s located on a dramatic, narrow headland that juts out into the Atlantic Ocean to form Portugal's most south-westerly point. It dates back to the 15th Century, a time when the Portuguese coast was often the target of raids from the Barbary pirates who heralded from the nearby North African shores

Golfers in the Algarve had to wait until 1966 and Sir Henry Cotton, who built the first traditional grass course at Penina, which is now called the Sir Henry Championship Course. The resort’s website describes the lengths he had to go to build the course, which is on a 360-acre estate. He planted 360,000 trees and shrubs to create a woodland environment and added streams and lakes to the layout.
