Occupying one side of a bustling market square, the Royal is at the heart of town and its well-stocked bar is at the heart of the hotel. Secure a comfy armchair by the windows, order a coffee, grab the ‘papers and it’s a delightful spot for watching the comings and goings at the heart of this traditional farming community. Food is served at lunchtimes until 2pm and in the evenings from 5pm to 8.30pm Sunday – Thursday and all day Saturday and Sunday. Our menu offers something for everyone: from artisan pizzas and tapas-style nibbles to a three-course Sunday roast. Served daily from 12noon our Afternoon Tea has become something of a Royal institution while the promise of a platter and glass of Prosecco often proves too much of a temptation after a long day hiking on the hills.

Sitting in Lancashire but only a few miles from the Cumbrian and Yorkshire borders, the Highwayman started life as an 18th - century coaching inn, in the perfect position to offer comfort and respite to those on their travels. Thankfully it retains much of its original charm. On entering you're welcomed by the bar which forms the heart of the pub. A mix of flagged stone and wood floors, rugs, plants and two open fires make for a cosy, comfortable spot to enjoy a drink with friends (or strangers) and a bite to eat if you fancy. Carrying on through and the pub opens up; just a little, into a garden room with picture lined walls and doors opening out onto the walled terrace, the perfect place to enjoy on more pleasant days. Back in the pub and you'll also find a private dining room. It's a lovely room with a homely feel created by the wall of books, plants and nic nacs. It comfortably seats up to 16 people for a private family meal or a business lunch, or, with a bit of furniture rejigging it would also suit perfectly a small gathering of up to 30 or so.

Windermere lake Windermere lake, at 10.5 miles long, one mile wide and 220 feet deep, is the largest natural lake in both the Lake District and in England, and is fed by numerous rivers. Strictly speaking, Windermere lake is just called Winder”mere”, with “mere” meaning a lake that is broad in relation to its depth. However here, to avoid confusion with Windermere Village, we refer to it as Windermere lake. The long thin lake itself forms the central spine of the Windermere lake area of the Lake District. This area is also known as the South Lakes. the tiny village of Bowness-on-Windermere lies on the shore of England’s largest lake. Ferries run from here across Lake Windermere, while the traditional stone cottages, lakefront pubs, and lively fishing harbour tempt travellers to linger a little longer.
