Somerset has some beautiful places to recommend it, but you will find few with more stories to uncover than Compton Martin. Located on the edge of the Mendips, this sleepy village has seen murders, hermits and several land feuds in its time. It stands to reason that many of the houses there are very, very old, and each of them has its own tale to tell. I spent a glorious sunny morning exploring the village and felt transported to somewhere far away, like the foothills of the French Alps or somewhere in the Lake District.

Wookey Hole Caves (/ˈwʊki/) are a series of limestone caverns, a show cave and tourist attraction in the village of Wookey Hole on the southern edge of the Mendip Hills near Wells in Somerset, England. The River Axe flows through the cave.[3] It is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) for both biological and geological reasons.[4] Wookey Hole cave is a "solutional cave", one that is formed by a process of weathering in which the natural acid in groundwater dissolves the rocks. Some water originates as rain that flows into streams on impervious rocks on the plateau before sinking at the limestone boundary into cave systems such as Swildon's Hole, Eastwater Cavern and St Cuthbert's Swallet; the rest is rain that percolates directly through the limestone. The temperature in the caves is a constant 11 °C (52 °F).

Sitting at the foot of the Mendip Hills in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), Blagdon Lake covers 440 acres and is classified as a SSSI by Natural England for its’ wildflower meadows and bird populations. The long, narrow shape makes it ideal for both boat and bank fishing. There are deep basins and long banks to drift over, plenty of points and promontories for access to deeper areas as well as shallow, sheltered bays of quieter water. Most of the seven-mile perimeter has easy bank access but to explore the more remote areas a boat is the answer.

You're perfectly placed for Bath and Bristol here, tucked into the Mendips in a pretty village that's fallen in love with its new inn - and it's easy to see why. The Litton is a gem, where owner Sally and her team work hard and happily to make you feel at home. As soon as you duck inside, you're wrapped in comfort, from reindeer skins on the sofas to mulled cider warming on the bar. Tuck yourself into a corner and order up a Welsh rarebit (ours was the best we'd ever eaten), or grab a Moroccan blanket and an armful of cushions and head for the riverside terrace where fire pits blaze, and kids can perch on colourfully upcycled beer barrels. The whisky bar is a temptation all of its own, as are the splendid Sunday roasts. It's not often an owner has thought of everything but Sally is a star, and the Litton shines out as special.

The Ethicurean Restaurant The Ethicurean Restaurant is founded on 'a sense of place'. This is the idea of having a connection with the native land, the community who grow seasonal food upon it, preparations with harmonious flavours and the understanding of its history. In our kitchen garden restaurant we give respect to the local produce grown here and sourced locally by using flavour combinations that have been partners for centuries. We look for ways to update and innovate historical recipes that highlight the bounteous nature of our land.

I’m Roger Wilkins and my family have been producing proper traditional cider from our farm in Mudgley Somerset for nigh on 1,000 years… well all right, not quite that long, it just seems that way. The farm is open 7 days a week from 10:00 until 8:00, ‘cept Sundays when we close at 1:00pm, so I can have a quiet Sunday lunch. You’re very welcome to come along to the farm and sample my CAMRA award-winning cider and then you’ll want to buy some. Want to order cider but can’t get here? I don’t do any of this e-commerce stuff – just call me on 01934 712385 and I can send you the best cider in Somerset! Why not order some cheese too, while you’re talking to me? Cheddar and Stilton cheese like you never tasted before, especially our un-pasteurised Cheddar – proper stuff!

The Ring O Bells Hinton Blewett is independently run by Ian & Jo Bennett. Our drinks, menus and style are our own, ever changing with the seasons. Low ceilings throughout the pub add to the cosiness with oak beams and inglenook fireplaces. We're 100% dog friendly throughout the pub and gardens, with a fully stocked doggy bar! It's the place to sip a real ale, cider or a glass of wine with friends old and new. “This pub is quite simply amazing. We popped in for lunch one day (huge, tasty, doorstop sandwiches) and it was so good we booked in an evening meal for another night. The evening meal didn’t disappoint either - superb service, amazing food in a lovely, quaint country pub setting. The pizzas are seriously good - sourdough heaven.”

“Pig hotels are all about dining and drinking and this, the third in the chain, is no exception. The country garden food and respectfully hedonistic atmosphere are what keep people returning to this Grade II-listed country house with its own deer park, though the rooms are good-looking too.”
