The tramway at the top of the Sandia Mountains, just outside of Albuquerque, isn’t the only way to get to the top of Sandia Peak. You can take La Luz Trail, too. This eight to nine-mile hike is not for the slackpacker. This is a strenuous and difficult trek with a 12 percent grade and close to 4,000 feet of elevation gain. The final stretch has a series of 19 switchbacks, presumably to make the getting-to-the-top endeavor a little easier. Best time to go is spring, summer or fall. Winter brings with it snow. A thought: hike up … or down … and take the tram as part of the experience.

City/town information

Albuquerque is mostly known for its International Balloon Fiesta, which takes place the first two weeks in October. If you happen to be here at other times of the year, there's still a wide variety of things to do. Take a ride on the world's longest Tramway to the top of Sandia Peak. Get to know the famous Unser family by touring their racing museum here, chock-full of Indy 500 trophies and some of the cars that helped them get across the finish line. The Albuquerque BioPark and nearby Old Town, where the city started, are also worth a stop.

Galisteo, in Santa Fe County, has had its fair share of film fame. It’s been the backdrop for many a Western, including Crazy Heart, Young Guns, and Silverado amongst others. Even the fantasy movie Thor was partly filmed here.
