Sightseeing

Two hour drive round trip to drive to the top of Pikes Peak, our local fourteenth. Charges are per car, and you drive through 4 different eco-systems, passing reservoirs and gorgeous rock formations. Don’t forget to get the freshly made donuts on top! Great for all ages, be aware of potential for altitude sickness and bring plenty of water.

I have mixed feelings about Cripple Creek. It is a beautiful, historic mining town with great views that has been entirely turned into a casino destination. It can be awesome in the fall, cool for a night if you’re into black jack or slots, and has some decent history and mine tours (check into the Molly Kathleen Mine), also an escape room within the museum. Do your research and decide if it’s for you. Some great hikes are on the way including Mueller State Park, The Crags, Devil’s Playground, and Pancake Rocks. We like going just for the drive.

We love quirky Manitou! With its abundance of shops (some better than others), yummy food/drink, creek side dining, parks, and the historic Penny Arcade (kid’s favorite) you can’t miss it. Sun Water Spa is also awesome for a day of hot springs soaking and pampering.

Quaint little walking, shopping and dining area. Great for a girl’s day out and has a fabulous farmer’s market on Saturday. Our favorite shops are Simple Body, Eclectic CO, Heartshake Studios, and Olive Tree Traders. Love to eat at Carnelian Cafe, Wobbly Olive, Alchemy, Pizzeria Rustica, and Paravicini’s. 25 minutes from cabin.

I know, a zoo’s a zoo. What makes this one unique is both it’s nonprofit/research efforts and it’s awesome location in the mountains. You get your hike in while seeing awesome animal exhibits. Bring some cash to buy lettuce and feed the giraffes - unforgettable! Great for most ages. About 30 minutes from the cabin.

Beautiful city park with lake, playground, wading creek, and amazing views! Grab a ball, frisbee, or kite and have some family fun! Our son loves riding his bike or scooter around the paths here. You can also fish in the lake and we’ve caught some good ones. Friday’s boast a really extensive farmer’s market from 7-1pm. Great year round. Within walking distance of the cabin.

If you love rivers, this is a must! Exceptional tubing, picnicking, and fishing abound in this day use area. Rent tubes in nearby Lake George at the general store and get ready for some high adventure! Check water flows as high flow waters in June can be dangerous and low flow in late summer can be a drag. Tubing only recommended for strong swimmers - not littles but wading opportunities abound! Right across the street from 11 mile canyon, you can do both in a day. 30 minute drive from cabin.

This is such a great recreational area. The initial hike, which is gorgeous, is more of a forest service road - you can jog it, or take a sturdy stroller on it. Mostly flat for first 1.5 miles to the reservoir. Branch off the main trail and find a “teepee” that out kiddo loves to play in. Once at the res you can fish, picnic, sunbathe, kayak, or ambitious folk can hike/trail run/bike the 13 mile loop around. No swimming. 10-15 minutes from cabin. Great views and photo ops of the front range and Collegiates on the way. Park at rainbow trailhead. You’ll see the cars.

This is the hike I recommend to everyone. Amazing bang for your buck. Located on the backside of Pikes Peak, within 3 miles RT you see streams, forests, valleys, peaks, lofty views, rock formations, and ancient scraggy pines. Relatively easy hike with a few inclines, and a little scramble right at the end. Worth it! Park at the crags campground and hike across to the trailhead. You likely won’t have cell service so start your mapping early and keep it going. Favorite of locals and visitors alike! Pack your water. 25 minutes from cabin, on the way to Cripple Creek if you are interested.

Just the best little local secret. Shhhhh. You can hike or run for miles on this relatively flat, low barrier out and back trail that follows a gorgeous little creek the entire way. Perfect for picnics and there is a little grassy area right at the start that is super fun wading and stick floating for littles. Awesome year round and less than 10 minutes from the cabin.
