Food scene

Owned by a couple of our Peoplestown neighbors, Sam and Sarah, this is the place to be for a great rotating list of house-made beers, neighborhood characters, amazing veggie-forward food, and a lovely staff. Check them out on Instagram for regular events, specials, and don’t miss their regular drag brunches (you’ll need tickets and they sell out)

If you’re around on a Sunday, check out the Grant Park Farmers’ Market, hosted in the parking lot at the Beacon (or right across the street). Open 9a-1p every Sunday, but get there on the early side to snag the best bread and produce before it’s gone!

A regular on all the fancy lists since it started as a two-man pop up a few years ago (James Beard semifinalist, Bon Appetit Best New Restaurants, Eater Atlanta 38 Essential Restaurants, etc. etc.), Chefs Parnas Savang and Rod Lassiter cook up amazing Thai food with local Georgia ingredients. Don’t expect your typical American Thai food - sorry, no pad thai - but you’re going to find a new favorite Thai dish here.

Atlanta’s Best New Restaurant in 2020, this place is as bright and playful as the food and cocktails they whip up from their open kitchen. Every dish is an absolute treat, as are the staff. You’ll want a reservation - we love sitting at the bar, which overlooks the open kitchen, but you’ll want a reservation either way. From Eater ATL 38 Essential Restaurants: “The chef’s mischievous sense of humor and creativity continue to be on full display in the dishes and in the cocktails at Little Bear. It’s best to order the entire tight menu here. Tell the server “Just F*ck Me Up, Fam.”

If you're gluten free (like Whit), this is the place! And if you're not gluten free (like Corey)... it's still the place! This woman-owned and -run bakery does unbelievable gluten free sweets (cookies, doughnuts) and savories (bomb breakfast biscuits, scones, and snag one of their frozen dinner pies if they've got any available). They're open Thurs-Fri (8a-1p) and Sat-Sunday (9a-1p) - they'll often have a line out the door, but definitely worth it to go early and either way don't worry it goes relatively quick and it's well worth the wait! If you go with a friend/partner, send them over to grab coffee at Victory Coffee & Calamity (in that same little complex) while you wait in line. Victory's also a great spot to take your Hell Yeah treats back to sit, eat, and relax.

Neighborhoods

Little Bear is right in the middle of Georgia Ave., a newly-redeveloped street that dead-ends into the Braves’ old stadium, which now hosts the Georgia State football team. You could spend a whole day hopping along Georgia Ave.’s great restaurants, a brewery (Halfway Crooks), soft serve (Big Softie), coffee shop (Little Tart), donuts and breakfast spot (Hero Donuts), and a finger-licking BBQ joint (Wood’s Chapel).

Walking distance from Casita Violeta, the historic Grant Park neighborhood is home to multiple area attractions including Oakland Cemetery, Zoo Atlanta, Grant Park Pool and Grant Park--the oldest park in Atlanta. Full of historic charm, a leisurely walk around the neighborhood makes for a fabulous impromptu tour of 1920s and '30s-style bungalows and Victorian homes dotting the landscape. The lush, leafy Grant Park offers abundant trees and rolling hills for a leisurely escape. There are also swings and a basketball court. Get your bearings and take in the park's rich history with a free walking tour. The Sunday Grant Park Farmers Market brings together local farmers and purveyors and is a unique way to experience the neighborhood--and to stock up on the week's groceries.

Sightseeing

Located in Piedmont Park, the sprawling 180-acre public park and conservancy in Midtown. In addition to the beautiful Botanical Gardens, the Park offers everything you'd want from an urban park: a greenmarket, a public pool, a scenic splash fountain, a dog run, a community garden, playgrounds, and more. Best of all, Atlanta's diversity is evident in the crowd and communities that congregate in this historic public space.

Historic Oakland Cemetery is Atlanta’s oldest public park and the final resting place of many of the city’s most noted citizens. Less than a mile from downtown, its 48 acres are full of treasures – history and gardens, sculpture and architecture, ancient oaks and magnolias. It’s a wedding venue, a green space, an art gallery, a classroom space, and a place to celebrate the city’s rich and fascinating past and its promising future. Check out the website for info on their amazing events and volunteer-led tours! https://oaklandcemetery.com/

Just down the hill from Casita Violeta, this is a lovely park for walking, or relaxing on the lawn. The large set of steps toward the softball field takes you directly to the Beltline (more on the amazing Beltline in this Guidebook!). While this park is typically pretty quiet, it can get hopping on weekends with birthday parties, BBQs, and occasional amatuer fireworks.

Great local shops

Speaking of street art, head downtown to Cat Eye to see (and buy!) work by ATL’s best young artists. The owner, Adam Crawford, opened this spot a couple years ago and it’s a can’t-miss spot if you want to experience the city’s diverse art scene.

Bars + Nightlife

One of the best dive bars in ATL, in Cabbagetown right around the corner from the Krog St. tunnel. They've got a hopping patio, great drinks, surprisingly good bar food, and a wacky fun crowd.

This gem of a place really also belongs in the "food scene" section - it's one of the best restaurants in ATL, but they turn it into an amazing sweaty vibey dance club at 11p on Fridays and Saturdays. They host a variety of great house music DJs, sling delicious drinks, and have a great back patio area with a late night hot dog stand for when your quads/eardrums need a break. Proof of vaccination required as of May 2022.
