Food Scene

Great food, highly recommended, 5 minutes from the apartment. Alternative Cretan meze-style taverna that attracts a young crowd, in the basement of a neoclassical building with vintage decor and tables outside. Kaltsounia (small sweet pies with fresh cheese), apaki (seasoned, cured pork), soft and tangy xigalo cheese from Siteia, perfectly fried potatoes, as well as eggplant with xinochontro (a type of Greek couscous) are just some of the Cretan delicacies on the menu. 3 minutes from home, eatery with a long history; haunt of intellectuals, artists and writers, serving traditional Greek fare since 1930: stuffed vegetables, lamb with potatoes, rooster in red sauce with macaroni, rabbit stew, greens, okra and other olive-oil based casseroles. Highlights include the strong feta and the feisty kefalotyri cheese. Tables on the pavement in summer. [41 Troon & Kydantidon • Τel.: 210.346.7555]

A quiet little sidewalk spot on both sides of an inclined pedestrian walkway that seems miles from bustling Kolonaki, this is where locals hang out for dinner (greek meze to share, nothing fancy, but delicious) coffee and beer. Ideal for a visit before or after a movie at the nearby outdoor cinema if you want to give that a try (Dexameni Outdoor Cinema)

If you want to try moden Greek cuisine, and you're in the mood to treat yourself a favorite small restaurant is Manh Manh. Located conveniently south of the Acropolis you'll find a creative Greek menu and delicious and their house wine label is great. Enjoy dishes like split pea pudding with pork siglino, small fried pies with kefalotiri cheese, beef meatballs with spicy yogurt sauce, scrambled eggs with tomatoes. You might want to make a reservation. The prices are above your typical greek restaurant, but so is the food.

Sightseeing

Anafiotika is a hidden wonder inside the bustling metropolis that is Athens. It’s hard to believe a place like this even exists–a slice of the Greek Islands that is a veritable oasis amidst city noise, concrete and graffiti. Today only about 45 houses remain. They are one of the archaeological treasures of the Plaka.

Entertainment & Activities

Athens has dozens of open-air cinemas, but the most enchanting are found nestled beneath the Acropolis. Get a taste of old-world movie charm at Cine Thisio, which first opened in 1935. Aside from popcorn and soft drinks, the snack bar also offers traditional Greek products to enjoy with your movie, such as home-made spoon sweets, gourmet Greek fish roe (avgotaracho), wine and fiery tsipouro.

Parks & Nature

Filopappou is the hill opposite the Acropolis and is really worth exploring since it is 5 minutes away from home . As well as being a pleasant place to stroll, you get what - in our opinon - is the best view in the city of the Acropolis. In some ways it gives you a better idea of it's grandeur than you get from actually being in it. It is a public park, so there isn’t an admission fee to walk around and this is off the beaten track. You'll share the park with Athenians. Great place for sunsets too. If you climb right up to the monument at the top, you'll also get spectacular views of Athens. You can do the whole thing in about 45 min.

Pnyx Hill which is next to Filopapou is considered the birthplace of Democracy because this is where the Athenians gathered to debate and govern the state of Athens. More generally, the hill is less visited than other central sites and a peaceful place to walk. This is a public park and there is no fee to visit.
