Meidlinger Markt is 3 stops away on the subway, or ten minutes by bike. It provides a bit of a break from the rather fancy neighborhood in Hietzing and allows you to experience street life in Vienna at its most authentic. Of course you will find a few great fruit&veg stands as well as butchers and bakers but most people come here for eating and drinking, and for the atmosphere. The people are very mixed, Viennese working class, hipsters, immigrants, all come here and that is reflected in the food options.

If you're in the mood for some beer and sausages or something similarly stereotypically Central European, Brandauer is the place to go in my neighborhood. A classic beer hall. Good beer and hearty food. http://www.bierig.at/_lccms_/_00431/Brandauers-Schlossbraeu-Wien.htm?VER=170516173856&LANG=slb&MID=126&ss=1

Cute, small tea room/tea shop. Vienna is a coffee city but if you prefer tea, this might be the place for you. They have a great variety of high quality teas and will be happy to advise you. Also good for a small breakfast or to spend a leisurely hour in the afternoon. http://teenorissimo.eu/?lang=en

High end Italian pasta bar and grill. Food is good but a bit pricey. Going there for coffee in the morning is highly recommended though. They have a special offer that's valid from 8am to 10:30am on weekdays and from 8am to 11:30am on weekends. During that time coffee is only 1.10 EUR. And it's very decent coffee too. Definitely the best price in Hietzing.

Teke the bus up to Otto-Wagner-Spital. The hospital is worth a look by itself, for its interesting and beautiful architecture, the tranquil park it is surrounded by and its sad history. Walk through the hospital grounds to Otto Wagner church, one of the most important examples of Viennese art nouveau architecture. But the best part comes when you follow the short part through the woods. You'll find a beautiful park/orchard with a wonderful views over the Vienna woods and parts of the city. One of the nicest parks in town but many people don't know the place. Perfect for spending a relaxing afternoon.

While the palace itself and the zoo are worth a visit, the real attraction of Schönbrunn palace is the extensive baroque park. Perfect for taking a walk, relaxing, having a picnic, or running, doing yoga or other exercise. From the Gloriette, the hill opposing the palace, one has a great view.

Drinks & Nightlife

This is a marketstall/bar that serves exclusively Austrian craft beers. Always 2 on tap (changing every couple of days) and many more available in bottles. It's one of the most unpretentious and inexpensive places to go if you're interested in sampling small local breweries. Things to try: 100 Blumen Wiener Lager: native style is coming back now after long having been out of favor in Vienna. 100 Blumen, a small Viennese brewery that just opened a few years ago are making one of the best. Malty amber-colored lager beer. Brew Age Dunkle Materie: My personal favorite and one of the best Black IPAs in the world.

Shopping

Zeitreise Antikmarkt. Every 1st and 3st Sunday in a month, except for December when it's the first 3 Sundays, there is an interesting small antiques market held in the main shopping area of the neighborhood. Great for browsing and maybe finding a special souvenir, more authentic and interesting than one from souvenir shops.
