Food Scene

If you like great, flavorful tomato sauce on your pizza and a really thin crust, this is your place. Their original location, open for decades on Lake Street, has closed, but the downtown location serves the same great pizza.

OK, so Blackbird's food is great, too, but don't even go here if you're not going to eat the Key Lime Pie. Amazeballs.

Hola Arepa started out as a food truck - something which, in itself, is a total scene in Minneapolis. They have moved up in the world, however, and the food at this tiny restaurant is delicious.

Homemade pasta. Really, really good. Definitely get a reservation because this place is almost always busy.

Drinks & Nightlife

Fantastic gay bar that, speaking as a hetero, I can say is not overrun with heteros. But dancing and drag queen brunches are fab fun for all!

The Retro Bar inside the Gay 90s is where I go to dance to Michael Jackson, Prince, Kesha, and Brittney. But tip the DJ well and he'll play anything you want. There's also a whole array of stripper poles to dance on - if that's your thing. :)

This is Prince's house, ya'll, and it may not be much to look at, but we love it. First Avenue is a legendary music club. Go here and see any group, just to see it. And get your picture taken with Prince's star out front. After he died, someone painted his silver star gold. No one knows who - it's still a mystery.

Shopping

This place has something for everyone - headshop, vinyl records, beautiful clothing, kids' and baby toys, and gift items of all kinds. And did you know Prince shopped here a few days before he died? It was his favorite record store. It should definitely be yours, too.

Essentials

Not the cheapest place to shop, but they have great stuff for foodies, and fun gift items, too. It doesn't hurt that it always smells amazing in here.

Parks & Nature

Lake Harriet has a three mile walking path around it, and the historic bandshell is a beautiful photo op.

Arts & Culture

This history museum is anything but stuffy. Exhibits are interactive and fun for people of all ages, and here, you'll really get a feel for what it means to be a Minnesotan.

Entertainment & Activities

In Minnesota, our outdoor climbing sucks, but our climbing gyms are rock solid (bahahaha!) VE Bloomington is one of the best gyms in the Midwest if not in the country. If you're not afraid of heights, or even if you are, pop into VE for a day and get a fantastic, fun workout for the whole family. (P.S. Your host is a climbing junkie, and she would happily show you the ropes. Oops, another bad pun. Sorry.)
