The Cathedral of Kuopio was consecrated on the 7th of April 1816, so the 200th anniversary celebrated in 2016. The church was renovated in 2015. The church is in neo-classic style, although some imperial features can be seen in the decorations around the pulpit and the altar. The architecture is characterised by clear forms, simplicity and a minimum of decoration. The altar was situated to the west because it was decided to have the main entrance facing, what was in those days the centre of Kuopio, the old market place. The paintings of the evangelists at the back of the church are the work of Urho Lehtinen. There' s a nice park next to the cathedral.
