A spectacular beech tree forest, full of wildlife and lots of different trails to explore. I advise you to take a photo of the map and the trail you wish to follow at the beginning. I unfortunately didn't one time and ended up slightly (most definitely) lost and then it started to get dark!

Mullaghmeen Forest is the largest planted beech forest in Ireland. Along with beech, within its 400 ha of forest, it also has Sitka spruce, Scots pine and Noble fir and a very interesting native tree collection. This is well worth a stop on the Mullaghmeen Summit Trail / Red Trail. The summit of Mullaghmeen provides magnificent views north across Lough Sheelin and into the neighbouring county of Cavan. it is also home to the red squirrel amongst much other wildlife.

On the very north-eastern tip of the county, this dense deciduous woodland is said to be one of the largest planted beech forests in Europe. A tangle of trails winds up past flax pits, famine fields and a booley shelter to a cairn looking out across Lough Sheelin into Cavan. At a dizzying 258m above sea-level, it’s the highest point in Co Westmeath, and you can increase that height to a vertiginous 260m by standing on your tippy toes. There are varies levels of walks and the terrain is good for a buggy or for small kids. Even on a wet day in the summer the foliage from the trees gives great shelter. Kids love it here.
