Yes, it IS a tourist attraction, and yes, it is pricey, and yes, it takes a day or two to visit. BUT - after 40 years living in Asheville, I still have a seasonal pass. If you are only here for a day or two - you don't have time for this. Add an extra day - the gardens are amazing, the art collection is as fine as any, anywhere. And George Vanderbilt and his family have shaped our region, to understand a part of who is Asheville....visit.

Giant house. Amazing grounds. Meticulous gardens. Bike trails, 4x4 tours, farm animals, a winery, etc etc. You can easily spend a full day here and not get to it all. But yes, it's touristy. This isn't the "off the beaten path" recommendation. Still worth seeing - especially May-October 2018 for the Chihuly Exhibit. Google it.

America's largest home. This estate, completed by the Vanderbilt family in 1895, sits on its palatial grounds not far from the Blue Ridge Parkway in Asheville's piedmont. Worth every penny to visit and be awestruck by its grandeur.
