A one-of-a-kind venue in the centre of Covent Garden, it’s a must-visit for every opera and ballet lover. Opera creates so much excitement, and just being inside this beautiful space gives you a thrill. Whether you are out to catch something new or a timeless classic, seeing a performance in the Royal Opera House is a unique experience. Arrive early to check out the street performers outside St. Paul’s Church or in the Piazza. The musicians are preselected by a panel of judges, so the quality is high and it’s always fun to watch. You’ll get a good view from the balcony above, or you can watch up close from a cafe downstairs.

The Royal Opera House, known as "Covent Garden", was constructed as the "Theatre Royal" in 1732 to a design by Edward Shepherd. During the first hundred years or so of its history, the theatre was primarily a playhouse, with the Letters Patent granted by Charles II giving Covent Garden and Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, exclusive rights to present spoken drama in London. In 1734, the first ballet was presented; a year later Handel's first season of operas began.
