Take time to walk along the Royal Mile. One end is the Castle, the other end is Holyrood Palace. The mile is full of shops and pubs - you could spend a whole afternoon walking along it!
If you are in Edinburgh for the festival this is most likely the area that you will visit. Not only is the Royal Mile a year round tourist attraction but the ticket office for Festival shows is found about half way up the royal mile so you will most likely go there. The Royal mile is a stretch of road that leads from Holyrood Palace and the Scottish Parliament all the way up to Edinburgh Castle. It is a really nice walk although some people prefer to start at the top (Edinburgh Castle end) and walk down, to then get the bus back up. This area is also full of bars and restaurants and lots of historic monuments.
