St. Stephen’s Basilica is the biggest church in Budapest. And with its height of 314 feet it’s also the highest building in Budapest (next to the Hungarian Parliament Building). And lucky you: you can climb the basilica and enjoy a gorgeous view. Which is one of the reasons to pay a visit to this church.
The dome is also worth a visit for those who are not fevered by classical concerts, because from here, from the top of the basilica, they will have a dazzling view. While one tower elevator takes you to the top of the building, the other takes you to the treasury.
A huge Cathedral on a beautiful square with restaurants, bars and coffees. It is truly an outstanding architectural masterpiece.
It is named in honour of Stephen, the first King of Hungary (c 975–1038), whose right hand is housed in the reliquary. It was the sixth largest church building in Hungary before 1920. Since the renaming of the primatial see, it has been the co-cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Esztergom-Budapest. Today, it is the third largest church building in present-day Hungary.
