A delightful old school movie theatre next to the beach at Avoca. A great reprieve on a very hot or rainy day.

Avoca Beach Picture Theatre began in 1948 in the front yard of brothers Mervyn and Norman Hunter. The brothers started it to raise funds to build the Avoca Beach rock pool and the theatre continued as a part of community life. Projecting through a hole made in Norman’s garage wall onto a homemade screen, people brought cushions to soften the wooden benches. The candy-bar was under Mervyn’s home and when it rained, everyone tumbled onto the verandah for shelter to continue watching the film! The brothers decided that a multi-purpose permanent structure was needed, and the Theatre was built. It included the 500 seat cinema, a Commonwealth Bank and a real estate office. The Theatre adapted as times required, with the inclusion of a Souvenir and Gift Shop from the 60’s, Alfresco Screenings on the lawn, a Café from the early ‘80’s and a Wine Bar, all of which continue to this day. In Christmas 1951 the building as it currently stands was build & has continued to change and grow over time. This quirky theatre offers an intimate and enjoyable entertainment experience. You can enjoy a beverage in the garden overlooking Avoca Beach prior to watching a movie, or indulge in a relaxing afternoon on the lawns. They have recently started offering paint 'n' sip events. Set in the garden, they would be a lovely way to spend an afternoon.
