One golden village, two tales. The picturesque preservation of two very different goldrush communities – Chinese and European – in a town that still thrives. A visit to this thriving picture-postcard tourist town enables visitors to view both sides of the gold-rush coin: the preserved avenue where wealthy banks and merchants traded in the mid-1800s, and the restored huts on the edge of town that reveal the more modest lifestyles of the Chinese miners.

One of our favourite walks in Arrowtown is Sawpit Gully which starts near the Chinese Settlement. It takes about 2 hours and is quite steep in parts so not for the faint hearted but you're rewarded with amazing views of the area.

Nestled above Arrowtown on the banks of Bush Creek lies the partially restored Arrowtown Chinese Settlement. The village is a reminder and tribute to the contribution made by the Chinese miners.

Wander beside the river, check out historic huts from Chinese settler gold mining days then enjoy brunch or a drink at the pub.
