Best Eats in the Woods

It can be a little daunting trying to find food in the forest, but don't worry. Max and Liz have outlined all their favorite spots just for you. All restaurants vary from 10-30 minutes drive time from the house.
While there menu is small, the quality of food is amazing. Dinner specials can be pricey but the burgers and sandwiches are reasonable. They also have really lovely outdoor dining, or you can take your good and drinks to the park 500' away.

Thai Siam is a great choice if you don't feel like cooking and don't want a sandwich. Their selection is large and very cost-effective. Sometimes I will grab a curry and make rice at home, having more than enough for two and only costing me about $10. Recommend take-away.

Offering indoor seating, Cook's is a blast from the past preserving it's aesthetic from back in the 1800's. While the building has been rebuilt, the staff is happy to fill you in on the place's rich history. Also, the restaurant is extremely haunted!

Further up the 88 about five minutes past Cook's Station, Ham's is also a historical restaurant and lodging. While they do not have as many ghosts, they do offer a beautiful outdoor deck with a great view. Best when the weather is warm.

Nature and Hikes

Liz absolutely loves to hike. Here are some of her favorite places within an hour's drive from the house. Be aware, most of the trails are only accessible after the snow melts.
Lake Tabeaud is about ten minutes off the highway 88 and is accessible year round. The road is curvy but pretty. The lake has a barbecue picnic area, places to fish, and a wonderful two mile hike that loops around. Paddle boats are allowed but there is no swimming.

Lake Margaret is a 6 mile out and back trail. It is absolutely stunning and offers lots of shade so is accessible even in late summer. Lots of people use the trail but there is plenty of room around the lake to spread out.

Our favorite home away from home, this small town was almost the capital of California. Take a morning or an afternoon to walk around and read about all of the history that happened right below your feet. If history is your thing, most of the locals are happy to tell you all about the history of this very important tiny town.

Located in the Antique Mall, the two story building is filled with individual booths of sellers each with their own style. It's almost like a museum and the people behind the counter don't mind if your in there for hours. While there are some really amazing, pricey pieces, there is also a lot of junks and fun finds so you can definitely take a bit of history home with you.

An absolute must! This bookstore is one of the most amazing I've seen in all my travels. They even have coffee so you can take your time browsing all the amazing old copies on subjects like art and mapping the new world. They have some books dating back to the 1700's. Even a brief visit is an absolute must.
