My favorite Beach

There are many beautiful beaches in Karnataka along its 320km coastline. One such is Someshwara beach in Mangalore, which is an immaculate and famous for sunset natural scenario. Netravathi River joining and mingling with Arabian Sea is at Ullal. Someshwara beach has spread over its long water play here in Ullal and gives a pleasant feeling to the visitors. The sand has a special look of gold dust, but you can’t smuggle it as gold since it is only dust. But when you walk on endless golden sands in cold or warm weather you feel it a pleasure and while walking in hot summer you will burn your feet. On the way to Mangalore we see golden sands, greenery and coconut palms on the length of beach to thrill us to feel not to miss it. The name ‘Someshwara beach’ is derived because of Lord Somanatha temple standing since several centuries on the sea shore. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva in his name of Somanatha. Lord Parashurama, one of the ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu, is present in the precincts of this temple in the form of statue. Mythologically it is said that Parashurama created the coastal region of Karnataka. Someshwara Temple is at north end of beach. It was constructed by Queen Abakka Devi of Ullal. Nearby you may visit her ruined fort and palace. In many sea shores the proverb ’water water everywhere but not a drop to drink’ would work. So by the side of this beach there is a pond with perennial source of sweet water called ‘Nagateertha’. Someshwara beach is well known for huge rocks on the beach called Rudrashile. Rudra is Lord Shiva and shile means rock. I cannot forget the scene of waves hitting these rocks by high tide that are wonders of nature. Close to this beach there is a hill called ‘Ottinene hill’. On reaching the top of this hill we can see and enjoy the beautiful scenery of river Netravathi merging and disappearing in Arabian Sea. There is lush vegetation and number of medicinal plants that are naturally grown on this hill. Someshwara beach is at 9km from Mangalore that is close to Ullal town. Mangalore is connected with rest of India by air, train and road. There are regular buses plying from Mangalore, Ullal, and Byndoor to Someshwara Bus Stand, close to beach. You can go by walk or hire Auto rickshaw. Tourist facilities are not available in this beach as such better carry drinking water and food as you find hardly any shop along the beach.

Right at the heart of Mangalore, there is an old home with a red-tiled roof, surrounded by tall mango, pepper, jackfruit & nutmeg trees, a beautiful pond with a bridge and the sounds of birds chirping. When you walk in, you will have travelled back in time; with Buddha welcoming you at the gate, a path leading you to a lush green flower garden, a home filled with paintings by local artists and art by local artisans. This is what Harsha DSouza envisioned for his 92-year-old father’s ancestral home. He wanted every Mangalorean to experience a real Mangalore, not just in photographs. Walk in and you will be greeted with some jaggery and water, just like the good old days. Have a seat in the little portico lit up with bamboo lamps, take a stroll through and see what our fellow Mangalorean artists are capable of, walk into the next room and be taken back to those years when you walked into your grandparents kitchen and smelled the aroma of earthen ware. It’s not just an art gallery, it’s Mangalore in all of its glory. If you want to see this alternate universe within the heart of the city, we’ll see you at Kadri Rocks Art Gallery! Address: Kadri Kambla Rd, opp. Vijaya Clinic, Mallikatte, Kadri, Mangalore, Karnataka 575004, India

Food scene

The Ideal Ice Cream is an ice cream manufacturing company based in Mangalore, India. It was started on 1 May 1975 by Prabhakar Kamath, and today it's the biggest ice cream manufacturer in Mangalore with an 80% market share. You can have one of the best ice creams and sundaes here. A place that cannot be missed if you are visiting Mangalore. We have literally grown up eating these ice creams and still crave for them. Ideal and Pabbas are both the same, just a different name given to one of thier outlets. You can try any of thier outlets for the same quality of ice creams. The only difference is in the ambience and a very small price difference, which really doesn't matter as a few outlets have parking facilities and a couple of them don't. Hence depends on whether you are walking down to the outlet or if you need a parking
