Essentials

This grocery store is the closest to the apartment. It's in the bottom level of the Galleria shopping center just down the street. Make sure to remember your shopping bags, or you'll have to buy them at the cash register :)

Merkur is a little bit more specialty (so also can be more expensive). If you're looking for something a little less traditional, this might be a good place to look!

A little further away, but Hofer is my go-to grocery store in the city. It goes by the name of ALDI in other countries like German and the US. Budget friendly and quality, can't go wrong :) It's walkable, or take the 74A bus in the direction of St. Marx for 3 stops.

Arts & Culture

The winter palace of the Hapsburgs right in the city center! You can take a tour of the imperial apartments and it comes with the silver collection and the Sisi Museum (infamous and curious wife of Emperor Franz Josef).

Some call it the Versailles of Vienna - a *must see*. Summer home of the Hapsburgs starting in Maria Theresa's time. 2 tour options here, shorter and longer (at 2 prices of course). The shorter one is fine if you're on a time crunch and you won't miss anything. The longer one gets you more apartments and history on Maria Theresa's time instead of just Franz Josef & Sisi. Tickets come with entrance times, & the lines to purchase at the palace can get amazingly long, so book ahead if possible. If you need to print them - just ask if I'm in town! The grounds are expansive and gorgeous even if you don't care about the palace tour. I always find a new place in the gardens :)

Parks & Nature

One of the largest and most gorgeous pieces of park and grounds in the city. It's popular not only for tourists coming to see the palace, but also for families on the weekends coming just to enjoy the space. You'll also find joggers running up and down the winding trails. There is much to see beyond the iconic flower beds directly behind the palace, so go explore! Find the botanical garden, the rose garden, or even a small bench hidden among the trees for a romantic spot or a quiet contemplative place for yourself.

Sightseeing

This is my #1 recommendation if you're crunched for time but still want to see as much as possible - and on a budget! Gives you the perfect introduction and orientation. For about €8 and 30 minutes, this tram takes you around the iconic Ringstraße or "ring road" circling the inner district. It was built in the mid 1800's to replace the old city wall (thanks, Franz Josef!), a small piece of which is still visible and will be pointed out on the tour. Simply going around this road shows you 90% of the iconic and historic spots in the city - Parliament, Rathaus, and the State Opera House just to name a few. After, you can walk to Stephansdom in 5 minutes!

Food Scene

I take all my friends and family here before they leave the city, and it's quite close to the apartment. Classic and well done Austrian dishes with beer brewed in house (Bräu means brewery) and served in a Heuriger setting. If you're feeling adventurous, try their chili beer! My favorite dishes are their Pfandl - stew swerved with Spätzle, but really everything is great, including of course, their Schnizel. It's easiest to get a table during the week, but calling ahead the day before for a reservation is best. Otherwise just try your luck and wait.

Getting Around

Public transit is the best way to get around the city. One of the best in the world :) This subway (Ubahn) stop is the closest to the apartment. Take a left out of the building, then a right and you'll run into it at the end of the block. You can buy your transit passes here which are good for all buses, trams, subways & trains within the city. When coming back to the apartment, exit the station toward Keinergasse. The subway line U3 that stops here takes you directly to Wien Mitte in 2 stops and Stephansdom in 4.
