Stone steps is the site of the famous Stone Steps surfing contest. It is a locals spot and for great reason-beautiful beach, great waves stretching out in beautiful lines, and the possibility to be away from the crowd. There is a stairway at the top of South El Portal to get down to the beach. There is no parking lot so getting there early you may find a parking spot closer to the stairs than if you wait until noon.

The closest beach access. Be forewarned there are steep steps to get down to the beach. If the tide is high there may not be much sand so keep an eye out. Otherwise, it's great for low tide walks and definitely a neighborhood spot.

One of one our hidden gems and is an historical landmark. Street parking only but worth the walk for a beautiful sunset.

A great local's spot with some caveats. Most importantly, it's a local's spot so be respectful. Also, check the tides before going. High tide makes this beach pretty much a no-go but anything around a medium to outgoing low tide will be fine. And finally, stay away from the cliffs. We've had tragedies due to partial collapse of the sandstone cliffs all along Encinitas' beaches and Stonesteps is no exception. Just give the cliffs a wide berth of and you should be fine. If you have any questions ask the lifeguard on duty at the bottom of the long staircase.
